Missed EMI? What happens next: charges, CIBIL score impact and what to do

One missed EMI is fixable. The cost, the credit record and the stress all grow with every day it stays unpaid. Here is what happens, day by day.

Short answer

If you miss an EMI, the lender adds a bounce charge and a penal charge (with 18% GST), interest keeps running, and the loan is marked overdue from the very next day. Lenders report to credit bureaus every fortnight, so a missed EMI can lower your CIBIL score. Paying within days keeps the cost small; after 90 days the loan becomes an NPA.

Key points
  1. A loan is overdue from the due date’s day-end: one day late already counts as SMA-0.
  2. Penal charges must be charges, not extra interest, and no interest may be added on them (RBI, 2023).
  3. Lenders report to credit bureaus every fortnight, so a delay can show on your report within weeks.
  4. 31 days late is SMA-1, 61 is SMA-2, and over 90 days the loan becomes an NPA.
  5. Most of the cost of a short delay is the bounce charge: paying fast matters more than the amount.

The salary came late, a client did not pay, or the money was simply not in the account on the 5th. Now the EMI has bounced and the bank’s SMS says “overdue”. The first questions are always the same: how much extra will this cost, will it spoil my CIBIL score, and what should I do now?

This guide shows what happens if an EMI is missed, day by day: the charges, when it reaches the credit bureaus, the overdue stages and the steps that limit the damage. The calculator beside the guide follows along with each example; type your own EMI and days late to see your case.

What happens if an EMI is missed

Four things start at once when an EMI is not paid on its due date:

  • A bounce charge, if the auto-debit or cheque failed. Many lenders charge around ₹500 per bounce, and your own bank may charge separately for the failed mandate.
  • A penal charge on the overdue amount, often 1 to 3% a month.
  • Normal interest keeps running on the unpaid EMI at your loan’s own rate.
  • 18% GST on the bounce and penal charges.

For a ₹15,000 EMI paid 15 days late, with a ₹500 bounce charge and a 2% a month penal charge at 11% interest, that adds up to ₹836. The loan is also marked overdue, and the delay goes into your credit record.

EMI missed by one day

People often search for this, hoping one day does not count. It does. Under RBI’s rules, lenders flag an account as overdue in the day-end run of the due date itself, so even one day late the loan is in the first overdue stage, SMA-0.

The money is small: on a ₹15,000 EMI, one day late costs about ₹606, and almost all of that is the ₹500 bounce charge plus its GST. The record matters more than the rupees. Pay the same day if you can, and ask the lender to waive the charge if it is your first slip.

Late fee and penal charges for an overdue EMI

Since 2024, RBI’s rules on penal charges apply to loans from banks and NBFCs. A lender may levy a penal charge for late payment, but:

  • it must be a charge, not penal interest added to your loan rate;
  • no interest may be charged on it;
  • it must be reasonable, the same for similar borrowers, and shown in your loan agreement and Key Facts Statement.

So read your Key Facts Statement for the exact penal charge and bounce charge. If the lender uses a fixed late fee instead of a percentage, turn on Bank’s charges in the calculator and type it.

Each bounce is charged again. If the lender re-presents the auto-debit and it fails a second time, you may pay a second bounce charge. Put the money in, or pay through the app or branch, before the retry.

Does missing an EMI affect your CIBIL score?

Yes. Since 1 January 2025, lenders must update credit bureaus such as CIBIL every fortnight, as of the 15th and the last day of the month. A missed EMI can therefore appear on your report as “days past due” within a few weeks, and your score may fall. The longer the delay, the more it weighs.

Days overdueStageWhat it means
1–30SMA-0Early warning; one payment fixes it
31–60SMA-1A serious delay on your record
61–90SMA-2Close to default; firm follow-up
Over 90NPADefault; recovery action can begin

An NPA is upgraded back to normal only when all overdue interest and principal are paid, not part of it. The late payment stays in your payment history even after you clear it, so a single short delay hurts far less than a pattern of them.

Murali’s late month

Murali is an electrician in Villupuram with a ₹12,000 personal loan EMI. One month a contractor paid him late and the EMI bounced. He paid through the lender’s app 10 days later, and the delay cost about ₹721, mostly the bounce charge.

Had he waited for the next salary and missed a second EMI, the picture changes fast. Two EMIs, 40 days late, cost about ₹1,835 and put the loan in SMA-1. Three EMIs, 70 days late, cost about ₹3,343 and reach SMA-2; four EMIs at 95 days cost about ₹4,981, and the loan is an NPA.

The charges for a short delay are small. The damage comes from letting one missed EMI become three.

What to do if an EMI is missed

  1. Pay the overdue EMI first, through the lender’s app, net banking or the branch, even before the next due date. Keep the receipt.
  2. Talk to the lender before it bounces again. If money is tight, write to them: ask for a few days’ grace, a change of EMI date to match your income, or restructuring before the loan reaches SMA-2.
  3. Ask for a waiver of the penal charge if this is your first delay. Lenders often agree; it never hurts to ask.
  4. Check your credit report a month or so later. If it still shows an overdue amount after you paid, raise a dispute with the lender and the bureau.
  5. Avoid a “settlement” unless you truly cannot pay. A settled loan is reported as settled, not closed, and later lenders read it as a default.

Recovery agents must follow RBI’s conduct rules: no threats or intimidation, and no calls before 8 am or after 7 pm. Complain to the lender’s grievance officer, and then to the RBI Ombudsman, if they cross the line.

A credit card bill paid late

A card works differently. The issuer may charge a late fee, or report the card past due to the bureaus, only after the bill is more than 3 days past due, and only on the unpaid amount. But card interest is far higher, often about 3.6 to 3.75% a month, and usually runs from the day you spent. A ₹40,000 bill paid 10 days late costs about ₹3,540 with the late fee and GST. Paying the minimum due avoids the late fee, not the interest.

Questions

What happens if I miss one EMI?

The lender adds a bounce charge and a penal charge with 18% GST, interest keeps running, and the loan is marked overdue (SMA-0). Pay it within days and the cost is usually a few hundred rupees; the delay may still show on your credit report.

Does a missed EMI affect my CIBIL score?

Yes. Lenders report to credit bureaus every fortnight, so even one missed EMI can appear as days past due and lower your score. Paying quickly and never repeating it limits the harm.

What is the penalty for late payment of EMI?

It depends on your lender: usually a penal charge of about 1 to 3% a month on the overdue amount, plus a bounce charge if the auto-debit failed, with 18% GST on both. The exact figures are in your Key Facts Statement.

What happens if personal loan EMI is missed for 3 months?

After 90 days overdue the loan becomes a non-performing asset (NPA). The lender can start formal recovery, the default is reported to the bureaus, and the account is upgraded only when all arrears are paid.

How do I pay a missed EMI?

Use the lender’s app or net banking, pay at the branch, or ask for a payment link. Pay the overdue amount with the charges, keep the receipt, and make sure the auto-debit is not retried on an empty account.

Does an ECS or NACH bounce affect my CIBIL score?

The bounce itself is a charge; what is reported is the EMI being unpaid. If you pay the EMI within a few days the loan is back to normal, but the late days can still appear in your payment history.

Can the bank take my car or house if I miss one EMI?

Not for one missed EMI. Repossession and recovery steps usually come only after a loan becomes an NPA, after 90 days overdue, and must follow the law and the lender’s notice process.
