Short answer

The best AI video generator depends on the job. For free short clips, Google Vids works with any Google account. For editing a clip by chat, the Gemini app (Google AI plans). For film-style control, Runway. For clips you can safely use in ads, Adobe Firefly’s own model. For a talking presenter, HeyGen or Synthesia, both with free plans.

Key points
  1. Google Vids lets anyone with a Google account make AI clips at no cost, in 1080p.
  2. The Gemini app makes 10-second clips with sound and edits them by chat, on Google’s paid AI plans.
  3. Runway gives the most control for film-style work; its free plan has 125 credits once.
  4. Adobe Firefly‘s own video model is trained on licensed content, so its clips are the safest for ads.
  5. HeyGen and Synthesia turn a script into a presenter video; both have free plans with limits.

You want a short video for Instagram, a YouTube intro or an ad for your shop, and you have seen clips made by AI that look like real film. Search for the best free AI video generator and you get lists of thirty tools, half of them out of date.

This guide keeps it short. It names the best AI video generator for each common job, says why, gives the steps to make your first video, and notes what each free plan includes on the official pages, checked 18 Oct 2026. Video AI changes every few months, and plans and prices change with it, so check the page before you pay.

Which AI is best for video generation?

There is no single winner. These are the best picks right now for named jobs:

How to make AI videos for free

The simplest free route is Google Vids. Google says anyone with a Google or Google Workspace account can make AI videos there at no cost.

  1. On a computer, open vids.new and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Choose Create AI videos.
  3. Describe the scene in one or two sentences: who, where, what happens, the light and the camera (“slow pan across a busy flower market in the morning”).
  4. Set the length of the clip, then extend the scene if you need more.
  5. Add text, music or more scenes from the templates, and export.

Every clip carries an invisible SynthID watermark that marks it as made by Google’s AI. HeyGen, Synthesia and Runway also have free plans; they are listed in the table above.

Write the prompt like a shot list: subject, place, action, light, camera. Short and specific beats long and poetic.

How to make AI videos for YouTube and Instagram

AI clips are short, usually 5 to 10 seconds each. A reel or a YouTube intro is several clips joined, with text and sound added. A plan that works:

  1. Write the script first. A chat assistant can draft a 30-second script with 4–6 scenes; our ChatGPT for business guide has prompts for that.
  2. Make one clip per scene. Use the same words for the main person or product in every prompt, so they look alike.
  3. Use your own photos where you can. The Gemini app can turn up to five of your photos into a video; real photos of your shop or product look more honest than invented ones.
  4. Join, caption and add sound in Google Vids or your usual video editor. Most people watch reels without sound, so add captions.
  5. Check every frame. AI still gets text on signs, hands and fast movement wrong.

For more control over each shot, Runway lets you pick a model per clip and edit what you made. Its free plan has 125 credits once; one 5-second Gen-4.5 clip uses 60 credits, so expect two clips before you need a paid plan.

Don’t make videos of real people without their permission, and don’t show a product doing something it can’t. Label AI clips in ads, and follow the platform’s own rules for AI content.

Making a talking presenter video with AI

For an explainer, a course lesson or a welcome message, a presenter video is often better than a film-style clip.

  • HeyGen: paste a script, pick a stock avatar and a voice, and generate. The free plan allows 3 videos a month, up to a minute each, in 1080p, and translation into 30+ languages; paid plans list 175 languages and dialects.
  • Synthesia: built for business training videos. The free plan gives 10 minutes of video a month with a watermark; downloading your videos needs a paid plan.

Neither free page names Tamil, so test your own language before planning a whole series around it. Keep scripts short, and read them aloud first: if it sounds odd spoken by you, it will sound odd spoken by an avatar.

An example: Divya’s tuition centre reel in Tiruchirappalli

Divya runs a tuition centre in Tiruchirappalli and wanted a 30-second admissions reel. As an example, here is how she made it.

5 scenes in her script, written with a chat assistant

2 of them from real photos of her classroom

30 seconds in the final reel, with captions

She wrote a five-scene script and made three clips in Google Vids from text: a sunrise over the city, a student opening a notebook, a results board. For the other two she used real photos of her classroom, because parents want to see the real place. She added captions with her timings and a WhatsApp contact line, checked every frame for odd hands and text, and posted it. When she needed a short welcome video in English and Tamil, she tested HeyGen’s free plan for it.

Questions

Which is the best AI video generator?

It depends on the job. Google Vids is the best free start, the Gemini app is best for editing a clip by chat, Runway for film-style control, Adobe Firefly for clips you will use in ads, and HeyGen or Synthesia for a talking presenter.

What is the best free AI video generator?

Google Vids, for most people: Google says anyone with a Google account can make AI videos there at no cost, in 1080p. HeyGen (3 videos a month), Synthesia (10 minutes a month, with watermark), Runway (125 credits once) and Adobe Firefly (free daily generations) also have free plans with limits.

How do I make an AI video for free?

Open vids.new on a computer, sign in with a Google account, choose Create AI videos, describe the scene, set the length and export. Join several short clips and add captions to make a reel.

Can I make AI videos on my phone?

Yes. The Gemini app makes 10-second videos with sound from text or up to five photos, on Google’s paid AI plans. Google Vids’ free AI video steps start on a computer.

Can I use AI videos in ads?

Usually, but check each tool’s terms. Adobe says clips from its own Firefly Video Model are safe for commercial use because it is trained on licensed content; partner models in Firefly may have different terms. Don’t show real people without permission, and label AI content where the platform asks.

How long can an AI video be?

Each AI clip is short, often 5 to 10 seconds; the Gemini app makes 10-second clips and Firefly’s models mostly up to 8. Longer videos are made by extending scenes and joining several clips.
