Guide
SGPA and CGPA, in one line each
SGPA (semester grade point average) is how one semester went. CGPA (cumulative grade point average) is every semester so far, put together. Both are the same sum: multiply each subject’s credits by its grade points, add them up, and divide by the total credits.
GPA = Σ (credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits
Credits matter. A 4-credit theory paper moves your SGPA four times as much as a 1-credit soft-skills course, which is why this tool shows, for every subject, how much one grade higher would lift you.
How to use this tool
- Pick your grading: 10-point for the common letter grades (O, A+, A …), US 4.0 for study abroad, or My own to type each subject’s grade points straight from your mark sheet (out of 10, 5 or 4).
- Subjects are named for you (Subject 1, Subject 2 …); rename them if you like. Set the credits with − and +, then tap the grade or type the points. The answer updates at once.
- Add a semester tab for each semester you have finished, or turn on Earlier CGPA and type the CGPA and credits from your last mark sheet.
- Below the card: Reach a CGPA shows the SGPA you need next, What lifts it most ranks your subjects, Conversions gives a percentage with the formula you pick (or type), and Your subjects is the full table to copy.
We don’t save your subjects: they live in your browser and in the link you copy.
The grade points
| Grade | 10-point | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | Very good |
| B+ | 7 | Good |
| B | 6 | Above average |
| C | 5 | Average |
| P | 4 | Pass |
| F | 0 | Not passed yet |
Your university may use different letters, a different lowest pass or its own points. Then pick My own and type the points from your mark sheet.
A failed subject usually counts as 0 points with its credits until you clear it, which pulls the SGPA down hard. Turn off Count failed subjects to see the average of the subjects you passed.
CGPA to percentage: it depends on your university
There is no single national formula. The one printed on the back of your mark sheet, or in your university’s regulations, is the one that counts for jobs and forms.
| Formula | 8.0 CGPA becomes |
|---|---|
| CGPA × 10 | 80% |
| CGPA × 9.5 | 76% |
| (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 72.5% |
If yours is different, choose My own under Conversions and type it. Classes such as first class or distinction are set by each university, so the tool does not guess them.
Planning the next semester
Turn your goal into one number. Reach a CGPA asks for the CGPA you want, how many semesters are left and their credits, and works out the SGPA every coming semester needs. If even all O grades can’t get there, it says so and shows the highest CGPA you can still reach.
Karthika’s third semester, Kallakurichi
Karthika studies engineering in Kallakurichi. Her third semester: Engineering Maths III (4 credits, A), Data Structures (3, A+), Digital Logic (3, B+), Object-Oriented Programming (3, A), the Data Structures lab (2, O) and Soft Skills (1, A+). That is 133 credit points over 16 credits: an SGPA of 8.31. The tool shows her biggest lift is Maths: an A+ there would make it 8.56, more than any other single grade. With a CGPA of 7.9 over 44 earlier credits and 3 semesters left, she needs about 8.4 in each to reach 8.2.
Study abroad: the 4.0 scale
Universities abroad usually evaluate your transcript themselves, often through services such as WES, subject by subject. WES does not publish its formula, so CGPA ÷ 10 × 4 is only a rough guide. The German grade uses the modified Bavarian formula: 1 + 3 × (best − yours) ÷ (best − lowest pass).

Questions
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA is your grade point average for one semester. CGPA is the average across all semesters so far, weighted by credits. Adding the SGPAs and dividing by the number of semesters is only right when every semester has the same credits.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
It depends on your university or board. CGPA × 10, CGPA × 9.5 and (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 are all in use, and some universities have their own. Use the one in your university's regulations, and quote it when a form asks.
What GPA is 8 CGPA on a 4.0 scale?
There is no single official conversion. Universities abroad usually assess your transcript themselves, often through services like WES. As a rough guide, 8 out of 10 is around 3.2 to 3.4 out of 4, but don't rely on that for an application.
Do failed subjects count in CGPA?
Usually yes: an F, RA or U carries 0 points but its credits still count until you clear the subject. Rules differ, so check your university's regulations.
Can I enter grade points instead of letters?
Yes. Pick My own and type each subject’s grade points, out of 10, 5 or 4. They must not be more than the top of the scale.
How do I calculate the SGPA I need for a target CGPA?
Multiply your target CGPA by all credits (done and still to come), subtract the credit points you already have, and divide by the credits still to come. The Reach a CGPA card does this and tells you when a target is out of reach.
Is my data saved?
