How to design a logo for your small business yourself, step by step

A clear name, one simple mark, two colours and the right files. What to do in Canva or with AI, and what to check before you print anything.

Short answer

To design a logo yourself, start with the name in a clear font, add at most one simple shape, pick one or two colours, and test it tiny and in black. Build it from your own shapes and fonts, not a ready template, and search the name on IP India’s free trademark search before you print boards and bags.

Key points
  1. A good small-business logo is the name in a clear font plus, at most, one simple mark.
  2. Test it at the size of a WhatsApp profile picture and in plain black before you use it anywhere.
  3. Canva says a logo made from its templates or stock graphics can’t be registered as a trademark; build it from simple shapes and fonts.
  4. Search the name on IP India’s free public search (word, sound-alike and logo searches) before you spend on signboards.
  5. Keep four files: SVG for printers, a transparent PNG, a PDF and a JPG.

You have a shop name, a WhatsApp number and a signboard order waiting, and you need a logo by Friday. Paying a designer isn’t in the budget, and the free logo apps give you a hundred shiny options that all look like someone else’s.

You can design a good logo yourself. This guide walks through it in seven steps: what a small-business logo should be, how to make it in Canva or with an AI tool, the trademark check most people skip, and the files to save at the end.

What makes a good logo for a small business

A logo has one job: to help people recognise you again. On a signboard across the road, on a carry bag, on a WhatsApp profile picture the size of a fingernail. Fancy details disappear at those sizes; a clear name does not.

So for most small shops and services, the best logo is simple:

  • the name, set in one clear font,
  • at most one simple mark: a letter, a plain shape or a symbol that fits what you do,
  • one or two colours, plus black or white.

If people can read it from across the road and draw it from memory, the logo works.

Try it

Best forMost shops. The symbol alone works when space is tight.

How to design a logo, step by step

  1. Write down three words you want people to feel: for example “fresh, homely, quick”. Every choice after this should fit those words.
  2. Look at your neighbours. Collect the boards and pages of shops like yours, and note what everyone does so you can look different.
  3. Pick one font for the name. A plain, sturdy font reads better from far away than a thin script.
  4. Add one mark, or none. Try the first letter in a circle or square, or a simple symbol (a leaf, a cup, a needle). Draw it in black first; colour comes later.
  5. Choose colours. One main colour and one support colour is enough. Our guide to brand colours shows how.
  6. Test it small and in one colour. Shrink it to about 1 cm wide and to a round profile picture. Print it in plain black on a cheap printer. If it still reads, it is ready.
  7. Make a stacked and a wide version. Wide (mark beside the name) for boards and website headers, stacked (mark above the name) for square spaces like Instagram.

Don’t judge the logo on a big laptop screen. Judge it at the smallest size you’ll ever use, and on paper.

How to design a logo in Canva for free

Canva is the easiest place to start, and the free plan is enough to design a logo. The catch is in how you build it.

Canva’s own help pages say a logo made from its logo templates or stock graphics can’t be registered as a trademark, because other users can use the same pieces and your rights to them are not exclusive. A logo you build from simple lines, shapes and fonts is fine to use and to register.

So in Canva:

  • start from a blank square design, not a logo template,
  • type the name and try fonts (Canva’s fonts are allowed in logos),
  • add a basic shape from Elements (circle, square, line) for your mark,
  • avoid illustrations, icons and photos from the stock library in the logo itself (they are fine on your posters and posts).

Downloading a transparent PNG or an SVG needs a paid Canva plan. The free plan gives PNG, JPG and PDF with a background, enough to start.

AI image tools (ChatGPT, Canva’s own AI, Gemini and others) are useful for one part of the work: ideas. Ask for “ten simple logo ideas for a South Indian tiffin centre called Annapoorna, flat, two colours” and you will see directions in seconds.

They are weaker at the finished logo:

  • the text is often misspelt or wobbly,
  • the result is a picture, not clean shapes, so it blurs when printed large,
  • the ownership is unclear. The U.S. Copyright Office said in January 2025 that typing prompts alone does not make you the author of an AI image; your own changes can be protected. We could not find a settled rule in India yet.

The sensible way: use AI for ideas, then rebuild the one you like yourself in Canva or another editor with real fonts and simple shapes. That gives you clean files and a logo that is truly yours.

Check the name before you print: the IP India trademark search

Before you order a signboard, spend ten minutes on the free IP India Trade Mark Public Search.

45 classes of goods and services; you search one class at a time

3 ways to search: by word, by sound-alike word, and by picture (Vienna code)

₹4,500 official fee per class to file online as an individual or small enterprise

How to do it:

  1. Open the public search and sign in with the one-time code sent to your email or mobile.
  2. Pick Wordmark and type your shop name. Choose the class for your business (the site’s “Class details” list helps: food service, clothing, retail and so on).
  3. Run a Phonetic search too, so “Annapoorna”, “Anapurna” and “Annapurna” all show up.
  4. Look at the status of anything close: registered, pending and objected marks all matter.

If a similar name is already registered in your class, change your name now, while it costs nothing. If you want to register your own logo, the online fee for an individual or small enterprise is ₹4,500 per class (check the current fee on ipindia.gov.in before you file). A search is not legal advice; if something close turns up, ask a trademark lawyer.

Logo file formats: which files to keep

When the logo is done, save it once in every format you will need.

A worked example: Selvi’s tailoring shop in Salem

Selvi runs a small tailoring shop in Salem. Her three words were “neat, friendly, local”. Her neighbours’ boards were all red with busy pictures of scissors, so she chose deep green with white.

In Canva she started from a blank square, typed “Selvi Tailors” in a sturdy font, and added a simple circle with a thin needle line through it, built from two basic shapes. She printed it at 1 cm and in black: still readable. She searched “Selvi Tailors” and “Selvi” in the tailoring class on the IP India search and found nothing close, so she ordered the board with the PDF.

Questions

How can I design a logo for free?

Use Canva’s free plan, start from a blank design, type your business name in a clear font and add one simple shape. Test it small and in black, then download PNG and PDF. A transparent background and SVG need a paid plan, but you can get by without them at first.

Which is the best app to design a logo?

For most small businesses, Canva is the easiest, works on a phone and has a free plan. Figma and Adobe Illustrator suit people who want full control of shapes. The app matters less than the method: name first, one mark, two colours, test it small.

Can I use AI to design my logo?

Yes, for ideas. AI tools often misspell text, give a blurry picture instead of clean shapes, and leave ownership unclear. Use them to explore directions, then rebuild your chosen idea yourself with real fonts and simple shapes.

Can I trademark a logo I made in Canva?

Only if you built it yourself from simple lines, shapes and fonts. Canva says a logo made from its logo templates or stock graphics is not exclusive to you and can’t be registered. Check the name on the IP India public search before you file.

How do I check if a logo or name is already taken in India?

Use the free IP India Trade Mark Public Search. Search your name as a wordmark and a phonetic match in the class of your business, and use the Vienna code search for pictures. If you find a similar registered or pending mark, change your name or ask a trademark lawyer.

What file format should a logo be?

Keep an SVG for printers and your website, a transparent PNG for social media and photos, a PDF for printing presses and a JPG for quick sharing. Save each in full colour, black and white.
