What does billing software cost one small shop, for the software alone?
₹0 to ₹26,550from a free plan to a lifetime licence, with GST
- Zoho Invoice (free for Indian businesses)
- ₹0
- TallyPrime Silver, 12 months, with GST
- ₹10,620
- Elathi SmartPOS Standard, one-time
- ₹9,999
- Lifetime licences
- ₹24,999 to ₹26,550
Billing software for a small shop costs ₹0 for basic phone apps, about ₹10,600 a year for a PC subscription with GST, or about ₹10,000 to ₹27,000 once for a licence you keep. Pick it by what your counter does every day: fast scanning, GST bills, stock, credit (udhaar) and working without internet.
- There are three ways to pay: free (basic plans, often phone only), yearly (a subscription), or once (a licence you keep).
- For a busy counter, check five things: barcode speed, GST bills, stock, credit (udhaar) and offline billing.
- A shop that is not GST-registered can still use billing software for plain bills without tax.
- Always try it free first with your own items, printer and scanner before you pay.
The bill book is full, the evening rush means a queue at the counter, and you have lost track of who owes what. You have heard of Vyapar, Tally and a dozen other apps, and every salesman says his is the best billing software for a small shop. What does a shop like yours actually need, and what should it cost?
This guide sorts billing software into three kinds by how you pay, lists what a counter really uses every day, and gives a simple way to choose. Prices are as shown on each maker’s own page on 18 October 2026; plans change, so check them before you buy.
What billing software does for a small shop
Good billing software turns three jobs into one. You scan or type an item, it adds the price and the GST, prints the bill and takes the item off your stock. If the customer pays later, it notes the amount against their name.
At the end of the day it tells you what you sold, how much cash should be in the drawer, and which items are running low. At the end of the month it gives your accountant the sales register for GST returns, instead of a bag of bill books.
The real gain is not a printed bill. It is knowing your sales, stock and dues without counting by hand.
What it costs: free, yearly or one-time
Billing software comes in three ways of paying.
| Kind | What you pay | Example from the maker’s page (18 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | ₹0, with limits | Zoho Invoice: free for Indian businesses, 2 users, 500 invoices a year. Vyapar: a lifetime free plan with basic features on mobile |
| Subscription | Every month or year | TallyPrime Silver (one PC): ₹750 a month or ₹9,000 for 12 months, plus 18% GST |
| One-time licence | Once, you keep it | TallyPrime Silver lifetime: ₹22,500 plus GST. Elathi SmartPOS: ₹9,999 Standard or ₹24,999 Lifetime |
₹0 for a basic free plan, usually with limits on bills, users or features
₹10,620 a year for a PC subscription (TallyPrime Silver: ₹9,000 plus 18% GST)
₹10,000–₹27,000 once for a licence you keep, for one PC, with GST
A free plan is a good start for a shop with a few bills a day. Read its limits: the number of bills a year, the number of users, and whether the PC version or barcode billing is part of the free plan. A subscription costs less on day one but keeps costing every year. A one-time licence costs more at the start and nothing every month; ask what happens to updates after the first year.
Add the hardware too. A barcode scanner and a thermal printer cost more than many software plans. See our barcode billing guide for those prices.
Which billing software is best for a small shop
There is no single best one. The best billing software is the one that fits how your counter works. Check these five things with your own items before you pay:
- Speed at the counter. Scan a barcode, type a few letters of a name, and the line is on the bill. Try it with a queue in mind, not on a quiet afternoon.
- GST bills done right. HSN code on each item, CGST and SGST split by itself, a bill number that never repeats, and a sales report your accountant can use. If you are not registered, it should print a plain bill with no tax. Our guide on how to make a GST bill lists what a proper bill carries.
- Stock. Each sale reduces stock; a low-stock list tells you what to order.
- Credit (udhaar). Put a bill on a customer’s account, take part payments, see who owes what.
- Works without internet. In many towns the internet drops in the evening, exactly when the shop is busiest. Billing should not stop with it.
Also ask: does it work in Tamil or your language, can your staff bill without seeing your profit, and how do you back up your data?
Phone app, web or a PC program
Phone apps are cheap or free and fine for a few bills a day. They are slow for a long bill with many items, and printing needs a Bluetooth printer.
Web (online) software opens in a browser on any device. It needs the internet for every bill.
PC programs run on a Windows computer at the counter. They work with a USB scanner, a receipt printer and a cash drawer, and the better ones keep billing when the internet is off. They suit a shop with a steady queue.
Take Murugan, who runs a kirana store in Kallakurichi with one counter, a boy who helps in the evening, and about thirty regular customers on monthly credit. A phone app would slow his evening queue, and a web-only program stops whenever the line goes down. A PC program with barcode scanning, credit and offline billing fits him best; whether he pays yearly or once depends on how long he expects to use it.
Billing software we make: Elathi SmartPOS
We make Elathi SmartPOS, Windows billing software for kirana, grocery, supermarket and fancy stores. It bills by barcode or by shop words like “cheeni”, works without internet, keeps stock and customer credit, prints on 58 mm and 80 mm thermal printers or A4, sends PDF bills on WhatsApp, and prepares GST files such as GSTR-1 for your accountant.
On 18 October 2026 it costs ₹9,999 one-time (Standard: updates and support for the first year, and it keeps working after that) or ₹24,999 one-time (Lifetime: every future update), for one main PC; extra counters need their own licence. There is a 7-day free trial with no payment details. See the SmartPOS page for today’s price.
It is not the right fit for everyone: it runs only on Windows PCs, and a shop that bills a few times a day from a phone may be better served by a free phone app.
Questions
Which billing software is best for a small shop in India?
The one that fits your counter: fast barcode or name search, correct GST bills, stock, customer credit and billing without internet. Try two or three free with your own items and printer, then pick the one your staff find quickest.
Is there free billing software for a small shop?
Yes. Some makers offer free plans, for example Zoho Invoice (free for Indian businesses, up to 500 invoices a year) and Vyapar’s free mobile plan with basic features. Free plans have limits, so check whether barcode billing, the PC version and stock are included.
Is Tally free?
No. On 18 October 2026, TallyPrime Silver for one PC costs ₹750 a month, ₹9,000 for 12 months or ₹22,500 for life, each plus 18% GST, according to Tally’s own page.
Can I use billing software without GST registration?
Yes. A shop that is not registered can use billing software to print plain bills with no GST on them. It must not charge or show GST until it registers.
What is the cost of billing software for a small shop?
From ₹0 for a basic free plan, about ₹10,600 a year with GST for a PC subscription, to about ₹10,000 to ₹27,000 once (with GST) for a licence you keep, for one PC. A barcode scanner and a receipt printer cost extra.
Do I need a computer for billing software?
Not always. Phone apps can make and share bills. For a busy counter with a barcode scanner, a receipt printer and a cash drawer, a Windows PC or laptop is faster and easier.
Does billing software work without internet?
Some does and some does not. Web software needs the internet for every bill; many PC programs and some phone apps keep billing offline and sync later. Ask the maker, then test it by switching your Wi-Fi off during the trial.
