Social media marketing for a small business works when it is regular, local and useful, not when it is loud. A simple plan is three posts a week (about 12 a month) on one or two platforms, each with a clear job: show a product, answer a question, prove you are trusted, or make an offer. Plan the month in one sitting and schedule it free in Meta Business Suite.
- Pick one or two platforms where your customers already are; for most Indian shops that is Instagram plus a Facebook page, with WhatsApp for replies.
- Post three times a week with four kinds of posts: product, help, trust and offer.
- Plan the whole month in one sitting and schedule it free in Meta Business Suite.
- Measure enquiries and visits, not likes. Change one thing a month.
- Turn on a professional (business) account on Instagram to see insights and add contact buttons.
You know your shop should be on Instagram. You posted every day for two weeks after Diwali, got a few likes, then the shop got busy and the page went quiet for three months. That is how most small business pages look, and it isn’t a lack of effort. It is a lack of a plan small enough to keep.
This guide gives you that plan: which platforms to use, what to post, a 4-week calendar you can copy, how to schedule a month in one sitting, and what to measure. It is written for a shop, a clinic, a school or a small service business, not for a brand with a marketing team.
How to do social media marketing for a small business
Social media marketing for a small business is simply this: people near you see your work often enough to remember you, and find it easy to ask you something. Four habits do most of the work.
- Be regular. Three posts a week, every week, beats fifteen in one week and none the next.
- Be local. Show your street, your counter, your staff, your customers (with permission). People buy from shops they recognise.
- Be useful. Answer the questions you hear at the counter every day.
- Make the next step easy. Every post should say how to order, call or visit.
A plan you can keep for a year beats a perfect plan you drop in a month.
Which platforms should a small business use?
Go where your customers already are, and don’t try to be everywhere. In India, the reach is large on all three big platforms. DataReportal‘s Digital 2026 report counts 500 million social media user identities in India (October 2025), and the ad tools of YouTube, Instagram and Facebook could reach 500, 481 and 403 million people respectively. Those reach figures are not the same as daily users, but they show that your customers are there.
For most shops that means:
| Platform | Use it for | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Photos and short videos of products, offers, behind the counter | Main channel | |
| Facebook page | The same posts, shared at the same time; local groups and customers not on Instagram | Low (share from Instagram) |
| WhatsApp Business | Replies, catalogue, order updates | Daily replies |
| Google Business Profile | Photos, offers, reviews on Google Maps | Once a month |
Switch your Instagram to a business account (free): Instagram says it gives you insights about your growth, ad tools and message tools. Note that a private account becomes public when you switch. Keep the Google Business Profile up to date as well, because many local customers find you on Maps before they find you on Instagram.
The four kinds of posts
Give every post one job. If you rotate four jobs, you never run out of ideas.
- Product: one item, a clear photo, the price, how to order. “Silk cotton saree, ₹1,450, 8 colours. Message us for photos.”
- Help: a question customers ask. “How to tell a pure silk saree from a mixed one”, “Which notebook size for Class 6?”
- Trust: a review, a happy customer, your team, how you pack an order, years in business.
- Offer or event: a festival offer, a new arrival, a holiday timing, a workshop.
Short videos (a 15-second walk past the new stock, the shutter opening at 9 a.m.) work well for products and trust. Photos are fine for offers and help posts. You don’t need fancy editing; you need good light and a steady hand.
A simple 4-week social media calendar
Here is a month of 12 posts, three a week, for Meena’s saree shop in Villupuram (our example). Swap in your own products; keep the pattern.
| Week | Monday | Wednesday | Saturday |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Product: new cotton sarees, with price | Help: how to wash silk cotton at home | Trust: a customer review with her photo, with permission |
| Week 2 | Product: a 15-second video of the wedding range | Help: choosing a saree colour for a function | Offer: weekend price on last season’s stock |
| Week 3 | Trust: the team and the shop front | Product: kids’ wear for the school function | Help: how to place an order on WhatsApp |
| Week 4 | Product: three best-sellers of the month | Trust: how an order is packed and sent | Offer or event: next month’s festival preview |
Add stories on most days if you can (quick photos of new stock, a poll), but the 12 posts are the backbone. On festival months, move the offer posts a week or two earlier, so customers have time to plan.
Don’t post a customer’s photo, name or review screenshot without asking first. A quick “Can we share this?” on WhatsApp keeps their trust and yours.
Plan the month in one sitting
Block two hours at the start of each month.
2 hours a month to plan and schedule 12 posts
12 posts a month, three a week
4 kinds of posts: product, help, trust, offer
- Write the 12 post ideas into the calendar above.
- Take the photos and videos in one go, in daylight, in the shop.
- Write short captions: what it is, the price or the answer, how to order.
- Schedule them. Meta Business Suite is free for Facebook pages and linked Instagram accounts: create a post, turn on Scheduling options, pick the date and time (the Active times button suggests when your followers are online), and click Schedule. Everything appears in the Planner calendar.
Then, each day, spend ten minutes replying to comments and messages. Replies are where enquiries turn into sales, which is why a well set up WhatsApp Business account matters as much as the posts.
What to measure, and when to add ads
Likes are nice, but they don’t pay rent. Once a month, count:
- enquiries: messages, calls and WhatsApp chats that came from social media,
- visits: people who said “I saw it on Instagram”,
- reach of your best post: what kind of post was it?
Keep what worked, change one thing next month. When your regular posts are running smoothly, a small ad budget can push your best post to more people nearby. Our guide on Facebook and Instagram ads cost shows what ₹100 a day gets you.
If you’d rather hand the whole thing over, our Social media and ads service starts from ₹6,999 a month; see our services.
Questions
How do I start social media marketing for a small business?
Pick one main platform (usually Instagram), switch it to a free business account, and commit to three posts a week for three months. Use four kinds of posts: product, help, trust and offer. Reply to every message the same day.
How often should a small business post on social media?
Regularity matters more than volume. Three posts a week is a pace most shop owners can keep, and it gives about 12 posts a month. Add quick stories on busy days if you can.
What should a small business post on Instagram?
Your products with prices, answers to common questions, proof that people trust you (reviews, your team, how you work) and offers. Show your real shop and town; people buy from businesses they recognise.
Is social media marketing free?
Posting, a business account and scheduling in Meta Business Suite are free. What it costs you is time, about two hours a month to plan plus a few minutes a day to reply. Ads are optional and paid.
How much does social media marketing cost for a small business?
Doing it yourself costs only time and, if you choose, an ad budget. Agencies and freelancers charge monthly fees that depend on the number of posts and whether ads are included, so compare what each package covers.
Which is better for a small business, Facebook or Instagram?
You don’t have to choose: posts made on Instagram can be shared to a Facebook page at the same time. Instagram suits photos and short videos of products; a Facebook page also reaches local groups and customers who are not on Instagram.
How do I know if social media is working for my business?
Count enquiries and visits that came from social media each month, not likes. If a kind of post brings messages, make more of it; if nothing brings messages, make the next step (price, WhatsApp link, location) clearer.
