Short answer

A Google Business Profile is free and puts your shop on Google Search and Maps. Create it at business.google.com, then verify it by phone, email, video or postcard (Google picks which you get). After you finish, Google’s review takes up to 5 business days; a postcard code usually arrives within 14 days.

Key points
  1. A Business Profile is free, and no one can pay Google for a better local ranking.
  2. Google decides which verification methods you see: phone or text, email, live video call, video recording or postcard.
  3. Use your shop’s real name only. Adding keywords or the town to the name breaks Google’s rules.
  4. Ranking depends on relevance, distance and prominence: a complete profile, your location, and reviews.
  5. Ask customers for reviews with a link or QR code, but never offer a discount for a review.

Someone in your town types “mobile repair near me” or “sweet shop Kallakurichi” into Google. A map appears with three shops on it, each with a phone number, opening hours, photos and stars. If your shop is not on that map, that customer walks into someone else’s shop. The listing that puts you there is a Google Business Profile, and it costs nothing.

This guide shows how to create the profile, how to get through verification (the step where most people get stuck), and what actually moves you up the map. Every rule here comes from Google’s own help pages, checked on 18 October 2026.

What is a Google Business Profile?

It is your shop’s free listing on Google Search and Google Maps. It shows your name, address, phone number, hours, photos, reviews and a button to get directions or call. You can reply to reviews, post offers and see how many people found you.

Google says plainly that creating a profile and listing your business is free. Anyone who asks you for money “to put your shop on Google Maps” is charging for their time, not for the listing.

There’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google. That line is from Google’s own help page.

How to create a Google Business Profile, step by step

You need a Google account (a Gmail address works) and about fifteen minutes.

  1. Go to business.google.com and sign in.
  2. Type your shop’s name, or pick it if Google already suggests it. Someone may have added your shop to Maps before; in that case you claim it instead of creating a new one.
  3. Choose your category. Pick the most specific one: “Mobile phone repair shop”, not just “Shop”.
  4. Say whether customers can visit you. If yes, enter the address or drop the pin on the map. If you only visit customers (a plumber, a tutor who goes home to home), hide the address and list the areas you serve; Google allows up to 20.
  5. Add the phone number and website. If you have no website yet, you can still continue.
  6. Finish, then choose a verification method now or later.

Take Senthil, who runs a mobile repair shop near the bus stand in Kallakurichi (our example). His sign says “Senthil Mobiles”, so that is the name he types. He picks “Mobile phone repair shop”, enters the street address, the shop number and his hours, Monday to Saturday, 9 to 9.

Use the name on your signboard, nothing more. “Senthil Mobiles Best Phone Repair Kallakurichi” breaks Google’s rules, and a profile can be suspended for it.

How to verify a Google Business Profile

Your profile is not shown to customers until it is verified. Google decides which methods you see, and you cannot change that. These are the methods on Google’s help page today:

MethodWhat happensWatch out for
Phone or textA code by call or SMSAn automatic phone menu (IVR) will not receive it
EmailA code to an email addressUse an address you can open right now
Live video callA Google representative checks your shop on a callOnly during your area’s business hours; not offered to everyone
Video recordingYou record the shop and upload it from your phoneAt least 30 seconds, one take, recorded live
PostcardA 5-digit code comes by post to the shop addressMost arrive within 14 days; codes expire after 30 days

What to show in the video

Many shops are offered the video recording option, and Google recommends it when you are eligible. Google asks for three things in one unbroken clip of at least 30 seconds, recorded live from the Business Profile on your phone:

  • Where you are: the street, a road sign, a building number or the shops next door, so Google can match the place on Maps.
  • That the shop exists: your signboard with the same name as the profile, on something permanent, like a board, wall or window.
  • That you run it: something only staff can reach, such as opening the cash drawer, the billing counter, the store room or your billing software.

Senthil starts outside on the road, films the signboard, walks in, opens the counter drawer and shows the repair bench and his billing screen. Forty seconds, no cuts.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

After you complete the steps, Google reviews your details. Its help page says the review takes up to 5 business days. A postcard adds the post: most codes arrive within 14 days.

Up to 5 business days for Google’s review after verification

14 days in which most postcard codes arrive

30 days before a postcard code expires

While you wait, do not change the name, address or category, and do not ask for a new postcard. A new code cancels the old one and slows things down. If a video is rejected, the profile shows “Review issues”: open it and follow the steps shown.

How to show up higher on Google Maps

Google ranks local results on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Fill in every field: category, hours, services, products, a short description in plain words.
  • Distance: how far the shop is from the person searching. You can’t change this, which is why an honest address matters.
  • Prominence: how well known you are. Reviews (how many, and the rating) and links from other websites count here.

So the work is simple and slow. Add real photos of the shop front, the inside and your products. Keep hours correct, especially on festival days. Reply to every review, good or bad, politely. Link the profile from your website, Instagram and WhatsApp Business profile, and add a WhatsApp chat link to the profile as well (how WhatsApp Business works for shops).

Getting reviews the right way

Google suggests sharing a review link or a QR code. Print the QR code at the counter, or send the link with the bill on WhatsApp: “Thank you for coming. If you were happy, a short review helps us a lot.”

What you must not do is pay for it. Google’s policy says offering free or discounted goods in exchange for reviews is strictly prohibited, and that includes asking someone to remove a bad review for a reward. Fake reviews can get the profile restricted.

Keep it alive every month

A profile that was set up two years ago and never touched looks closed. Once a month, add a few new photos, post an offer or an update, and check that the hours and phone number are right. If you make this part of a simple monthly social media plan, it takes ten minutes. If you’d rather someone else handles it along with your posts, see our services.

Questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Google says creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free. You pay only if you choose to run Google Ads, which are separate and optional.

How do I verify my Google Business Profile without a video?

You can only use the methods Google offers your profile, and you cannot change them. If you see phone, email or postcard, pick one of those. If video is the only option, record it from the Business Profile on your phone; it takes under a minute.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take?

Google’s review takes up to 5 business days after you complete verification. With a postcard, add the time for the post: most codes arrive within 14 days, and they expire after 30 days.

Can I create a Google Business Profile without a shop address?

Yes, if you serve customers at their place. Choose a service-area business, hide your address and list up to 20 areas you serve. If you don’t meet customers at your address, Google says not to show it.

Can I add “best” or my town’s name to the business name?

No. Google’s guidelines say the name must be the one you use in the real world, on your signboard and bills. Extra keywords or locations in the name are not allowed and can get the profile suspended.

How do I get more Google reviews?

Ask every happy customer, and make it easy with a review link or a QR code at the counter. Reply to each review. Never offer a discount or gift for a review: Google prohibits it.

Can I pay Google to show my shop first on Maps?

No. Google states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Ads can appear above the map results, but they are marked as ads and are a separate, paid product.
